CHROMASCAPE 143: BEACH DREAMS

BEACH DREAMS

Bar Harbor, ME  |  2025

A fun night on the beach with new friends, a campfire, great food, and smooth whisky led to my unplanned violation of the no-camping ban. I woke up to loud knocking on my van accompanied by “Bar Harbor Police. Open up!”. I opened the door and an officer informed me that camping on the beach was prohibited and I needed to leave immediately. It was still dark out and I asked the time. “4:00 a.m.” came the reply. I apologized, then explained that that I’m a professional photographer and sunrise was in 45 minutes and a great time to make photos. Could I please stay and photograph the sunrise? He laughed and agreed, but told me to be gone by 6 or he’d write me an expensive ticket.

Given this reprieve, I quickly set up my camera at the water’s edge. It had rained all night, and the sky was just beginning to clear with the sunrise. The clouds provided great structure and color that really make this image special, while the water beautifully reflected the morning sky. Lights of a lobster boat cut through the darkness on the right. It was a calm, dreamy morning on the beach and another example of the Universe providing. It was this unexpected gift of a night with new friends followed by an early-morning wakeup from the police that made Chromascape 143 possible. ~ Marc
