San Francisco Bay Sunrises

This collection of 23 Chromascapes was created over seven consecutive mornings at the water's edge in Sausalito, California, in January 2026. While visiting family, I returned to the same location before the day's first light each morning to photograph San Francisco Bay as the sunrise unfolded. Being present and making my art in the same place each morning revealed that while the landscape remained unchanged, the ever-changing light transformed my experience of it into something entirely new—a wonderful reminder that each new day has its own gifts.

As I crafted these Chromascapes in the changing light each morning, three distinct subjects continually drew my attention. The first was the broad expanse of San Francisco Bay itself, explored through both individual Chromascapes and something new in my work: diptychs. The diptychs, each comprised of two individual Chromascapes, tell the fuller story of the panoramic view stretching from Angel Island across the East Bay to the Bay Bridge and San Francisco.

The second explores the awakening lights along Sausalito's waterfront as they merge into the colors of the bay and the brightening sky.

The third centers on the Sausalito Ferry Terminal, where the dock lights—and on some mornings the arriving ferry itself—became luminous accents against the hills of Tiburon and the changing colors of dawn.
